Pet Valu reports Q3 profit down from year ago, revenue up

MARKHAM, Ont. — Pet Valu Holdings Ltd. reported net income of $18.0 million in its latest quarter, down from $27.0 million a year ago, even as its revenue rose.The pet food and supplies retailer says the profit amounted to 25 cents per diluted share for the quarter ended Sept. 30, down from 38 cents per diluted share a year earlier.Revenue for the company’s third quarter totalled $262.3 million, up from $244.7 million in the same quarter last year.The company says the increase came as same-store sales gained 4.2 per cent, helped by a 4.0 per cent increase in same-store average spend per transaction and a 0.2 per cent gain in same-store transactions.On an adjusted basis, Pet Valu says it earned 39 cents per diluted share in its most recent quarter, down from an adjusted profit of 43 cents per diluted share a year earlier.In its outlook for its full year, Pet Valu says it expects revenue of between $1.055 billion and $1.065 billion. CHICAGO — Police are investigating after several businesses were broken into on the North Side late Monday and early Tuesday.According to police, a group targeted businesses along Lincoln Avenue in North Center and Lincoln Square starting around 11:40 p.m. into the 1 a.m. hour.In at least three locations the group smashed the front door of the businesses and attempt to damage and take the register.Other businesses had damage to their front door. AUSTIN (KXAN) – Austin Police said it is looking for a man suspected robbing a taco truck in southeast Austin last month. According to APD, the man entered the Taqueria Piedra Grande #2 taco truck at 1729 East Riverside Drive around 2:10 p.m. on Oct. 9. Police said he held a knife to an employee's throat, demanded money and threatened to kill her if she did not comply. AUSTIN (Nexstar) — Texans will soon vote on a proposition to revamp state parks in Texas in the Nov. 7 constitutional amendment election.Texas Proposition 14, originating from S.J.R 74, would establish the Centennial Parks Conservation Fund to help the acquisition, development, and maintenance of state parks. ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) -- The city of Round Rock issued a warning to voters ahead of Tuesday's general election to be aware of a "misleading" petition circulating outside of polling sites that is calling for a charter amendment to add up to 12 billboards along I-35 within city limits.The petition is being pushed by a group called Keep Round Rock Safe. Its website says it is a coalition of local Round Rock businesses that are advocating for the installment of Electronic Message Centers (EMC). ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. - A late-night hit-and-run in Ferguson sends three MoDOT contract workers to the hospital. St. Louis County Police confirmed for FOX 2 on Tuesday morning that the alleged hit-and-run driver is in custody. The incident took place just off I-270 at New Halls Ferry. It appears a white sedan was the vehicle that hit the workers. Ferguson Police Chief Troy Doyle said that while the suspect vehicle remained at the scene, the driver of the car ran away after the incident.
