Recovery sleep on the weekend doesn't help: Study

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:06:59 GMT

Some early birds don't get much sleep during the week with the expectation that they'll make it up during the weekend. However, a new study says waiting to catch up on zzzs doesn't work. Map: One part of California drinks more than others, study finds Penn State University measured the sleeping habits of men ages 20 to 35. They were only allowed to sleep five hours during the week and then 10 hours on the weekend. Researchers found that the extra hours had no impact on the participants' baseline levels of sleep. In fact, the study found the participants had higher heart rates, which could lead to more heart problems as they age. (Unsplash) “Only 65% of adults in the U.S. regularly sleep the recommended seven hours per night, and there's a lot of evidence suggesting that this lack of sleep is associated with cardiovascular disease in the long term,” said Anne-Marie Chang, associate professor of biobehavioral health and co-author of the work published in the journal Psychosoma...

Paravi Examines Her Skeleton: Rising singer and songwriter Paravi has released new single “Skeleton” via RCA Records. It’s a soulful, emotional pop tune that has a chorus reminiscent of Florence + the Machine’s most epic moments. With a rap ending.“This is a song about being the amalgamation of my parents, my chosen family, and my ancestors,” says Paravi. “For the first time in my life, I found myself questioning whether or not I’m good enough, talented enough, special enough to reach the levels of success and impact I’ve always dreamt of. I sat with myself and asked who the most powerful people in my life were, the most compassionate, kind, and hopeful. And the answers were my parents, my brother, my grandparents, and my relatives in India. My chosen family.”“I realized it was the people whose blood runs in my veins,” she continues. “I am a part of them. I am literally part of my mother and father, my ancestors…our f...

Junior safety Jadyn Hudson is getting national recruiting attention, as is fellow highly-touted junior edge-rusher Jewelous Walls. Junior linebacker Etene Pritchard led the NorCal Division I champions in tackles. Junior quarterback Marley Alcantara threw for 14 touchdowns as a backup and spot starter, and could be the next great Pittsburg quarterback. Squabbling podcasters Mabel (Selena Gomez), Oliver (Martin Short) and Charles-Haden (Steve Martin) investigate murders that go down in their building. And Los Angeles lawyer Mickey Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) juggles cases, as he bounces back into the courtroom after a hard patch in his life. This summer saw a surge of mysteries, bingeable watches that fire up – as Hercule Poirot so pithily dubbed – our “little grey cells.”There’s little doubt that audiences eat these shows up: David E. Get used to driving roundabouts — the Bay Area is adding more: Roadshow

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:06:59 GMT

Q: I was in Europe recently and amazed how we (a motorcycle tour group) could ride long routes through many towns and cities without ever stopping. The main reason for this is roundabouts. They were well-designed, not what we seem to be getting in the U.S. It helps when drivers have familiarity with roundabouts, but I also found that most European roundabouts were larger. The curve, being more relaxed, meant you could drive faster through them. The larger size also allowed better viewing of oncoming traffic in the circle. You could more easily judge the merge and there was more room to navigate.Too many intersections here are poorly designed. Many roundabouts seem to be created almost as a speed bump to slow traffic, rather than to help increase the flow of traffic. Certainly, available land is a problem, but it’s not like Europe has lots of room for intersections either, with towns designed much longer ago. Our traffic engineers need not be afraid to move forward to good solutions....

Oakland Airport expansion is a threat to climate change goals, environmental coalition warns

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:06:59 GMT

After an onslaught of wildfires, dangerous heat and flooding over the past few years, a recent survey shows that a third of Bay Area residents view climate change as one of the most pressing challenges facing the region.Air travel so far seems to have escaped scrutiny in the ongoing debate. But as the Oakland International Airport plans its first major expansion in 40 years, that may be changing. On Tuesday, a broad coalition of over 60 organizations will rally at the airport in protest of the plan to build a new terminal, add more gates and ultimately increase air traffic in the East Bay.Public awareness of aviation’s contributions to climate change “has been a huge blind spot,” said Lin Griffith, a member of the steering committee for Stop OAK Expansion Coalition. “We don’t need this.”In July, Oakland Airport officials published a draft environmental report outlining their plans for what they described as a long overdue effort to reimagine an airport that hasn’t seen signifi...
