Meet the Mannerist Monsters of Beck+Col

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:08:15 GMT

Beck+Col are an artist duo whose intertwined imaginations spawn marvelous, mannerist monsters. They then build worlds for these queer and regal surrealist beings to inhabit—only to shake it all up with stylish gore. Influenced by everything from gaming to cognitive science and chromatic theory, for Beck+Col the exaggerations and violence operate both as compelling spectacle and as a meta-critique of the extreme decadence of late-stage capitalism. Though ultimately works of performance and filmmaking, along the way, disciplines from couture to music, cinematography, choreography, and special effects come into play—as does a profound ethos of collaboration. Often the films are full of works of mixed media art made by their extended community of adventurous colleagues—and in service of their new work Red Night, the artists have staged an architectural installation at the art room in whose animated, aggressive color story they show clips from the movie among art and artifacts from the f...

That’s not a bad thing, though, when the first available cutover to the coast involves Paso Robles. As you hea...

Baseball and hot dogs go together about as well as a ball and glove. Seemingly meant for each other, usually the hot dog involved in this pairing is a pretty pedestrian affair, except on Alameda’s West End.For the past eight months, residents of the Island city have feasted on more substantial hot dogs, all with a baseball theme, at Left Field Dogs on Webster Street.“Alameda’s known for its baseball culture,” says the hot doggery’s co-owner, Abraham Kinfu, 38. “We wanted to pay homage to our baseball athletes.”Describing himself and partner John Ngu, also 38, as baseball fans, Kinfu, who holds an MBA from St. Mary’s College in Moraga, says the pair, who first met while attending Alameda’s Encinal High School, wanted to incorporate baseball culture, love for their hometown and hot dogs into the venture. Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:08:15 GMT

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden has long struggled to neatly summarize his sprawling economic vision. It’s been hard for voters to digest the mix of roads-and-bridges spending, tax hikes on big companies, tax credits for parents, tax breaks for renewable energy, grants to build computer chip factories, insulin price caps and slogans like “Build Back Better.” And that barely covers the full breadth of what the administration is doing and trying to do.Last week, the president gave a speech on “Bidenomics” in hopes that the term will lodge in voters’ minds ahead of the 2024 elections. But what is Bidenomics? Let’s just say the White House definition is different from the Republican one — evidence that catchphrases can be double-edged.Biden says his economic philosophy is the opposite of a Republican approach that favors broad tax cuts to spur growth. He sees the government as using the tax code in a more targeted fashion and fashioning other programs to foster investment in new t...
